PASEO

A global mental health organization dedicated to increasing services for the Latinx population across borders

OVERVIEW

PASEO Salud Mental is a global mental health organization focused on increasing access to mental health services for the Latinx population in the U.S. as well as in low-resource communities in Peru and Guatemala. The heart of the program is an immersion-based language training program for students and professionals who provide clinical services in Spanish in the United States. In addition, we also provide mental health capacity building and applied research assistance for organizations seeking to close gaps to mental health care in Latin America. Our current target communities include Trujillo in Northern Peru, Ayacucho in the Central Andes, and two communities in Guatemala.

THE Language and immersion PROGRAM

Uniting students and professionals committed to improving the quality of mental health services for Spanish speakers in the U.S.

The language component of PASEO focuses on providing specialized language and culture training for students and professionals in psychology and related fields. The program is designed to help individuals in the mental health field strengthen their linguistic and clinical skills to better service Latinx populations in the United States and globally, while also providing psychoeducational and mental health prevention services to children and families in low resource regions of Peru who might not otherwise be able to access such services.

PASEO works in collaboration with local non-profits and educational centers in Northern Peru and in the Peruvian highlands, as well as with local language teachers and mental health professionals, in an attempt to offer a sustainable, responsible, and culturally-sensitive immersion and practicum experience.

All students in the PASEO program participate in the following:

1. Specialized training in Spanish for mental health.

2. Didactic seminars on working with Latinx clients and on delivering mental health in low resource settings.

3. Service learning through engagement in psychosocial and educational activities.
